Trumpet Like funk? Well, you’re probably a fan of polyester bell bottoms, oversize Bootsy Collins sunglasses and hair picks.
This new incarnation of Cathey Cotten and Elliott's Evil Plan is a 10 piece "Big Band" that is a fan of polyester bell bottoms and oversize Bootsy Collins sunglasses. Whether they are performing dance songs from the 70s that have a political bite and a gospel soul or funky arrangements of tunes by Issak Hayes, Stevie Wonder or the Beatles, The Atomic Beat Society's fresh take on classic grooves keep fans on the dance floor.
Striking a fine balance between exciting arrangements and fiery solos, The Atomic Beat Society never fails to delight with their feel-good, high-energy hybrid of funk, soul and jazz. At the band's core is Cotten (bandleader, singer), Elliott Shannonhouse (lead guitar), Byron Rynes (guitar), John-Paul McLean (bass), Steve Guerrero (drums), Ron Ransford (percussion) and Gig Anderson (keyboard). Alongside this core group, the Society features the finest horn section from the vibrant San Francisco Bay Area jazz and funk scene - alto saxophonist Ray Clement (Wall Street), trumpeter Rich Armstrong and tenor saxophonist Rob Zuckerman (Cold Blood).
The Hoovers are led by two Brits, singer-song writers Paul Whiting and William Sell, who relocated to San Francisco from London and carried their accents with them, making them the only California ska band that sounded legitimately like the British 2-Tone bands of the early 80's. Though the 4-piece band, at the time, had no horn section, they sounded very much like a Yank version of Madness. Their critically acclaimed debut album "Skin and Blisters" received rave reviews throughout the U.S. and has become something of a collector's item among hardcore fans of 2tone and ska. This album included a frantic ska version of Sonny & Cher's "I Got You Babe" long before UB40 decided to do a pop-reggae version with Chrissy Hynde. They followed their first LP with an E.P. titled "Smut & Class."
